When we arrived at Trakai, it was very cold and the weather was rather grey. Because of the ambient temperature, the lake called “Galvé” surrounding its castle of red bricks was totally frozen. This city is an old medieval city situated approximately at thirty kilometers from Vilnius. The castle was built under Gedimanas and remains the only island castle of the Eastern Europe. This place is one of the architectural emblems of Lithuania, thanks to its originality, its age and its state of preservation. However, the castle such as we know it today, dates only of the end of the fourteenth century. Since this period, it benefited from several successive restorations, sign of the attachment of Lithuanian for this monument. In the early morning, we visited this castle and the medieval museum which is inside. We have seen diverse objects of the time of Gediminas: knight's armor, safe, coins, tapestry, jewels and even a shoe. During the lunch, we tasted in a traditional restaurant called "Senoji Kibininé ", kibinas, sorts of Lithuanian croissants filled with chicken. The city of Trakai must be visited, because besides its typicality, we can taste very good specialities there.
