The cathedral of Vilnius is one of the most important and big monument of the country.
The Mindaugas king maked build the cathedral in 1251 after its conversion in the Christianity. Its architecture has changed a lot in eight centuries. The church was rebuilt several times owed to fires and wars. Today, it has a neo-classic style which dates its reconstruction of 1801. The last catering of the cathedral was made in 2008.
Three sculptures of Kazimierz Jelski were placed on the roof of the cathedral : Saint Casimir in the South, Saint Stanislas in the North and Saint Helene in the center. These sculptures symbolize Lithuania, Poland and Russia.
Many Grand Dukes of Lithuania were crowned and buried there.
It is situated in the Old Town, at the end of the main street (Gediminas avenue) and near the hill.
There is a bell tower in front of the church, which measures 57 meters. It was originally part of one of the gates in the city’s defensive wall.
